Auditor-General reject‘s charter schools contract inquiry

The Auditor-General has rejected a request from National MP Nikki Kaye for an inquiry into the way the government has handled contract negotiations with charter schools.

The government is in the process of closing down the schools, or allowing them to become special character schools.

Ms Kaye asked the office of the Auditor-General to investigate the contract negotiations and the transition process for some schools.

The office said the contracts with schools allow for termination and the Education Ministry is following a transition process.

The office said its primary role was to look at how public money was being used, not to question government policy.
